Canton, Woodstock, Alpharetta Oh My!!

Where are you from?

We have students from Ballground, Jasper, Alpharetta, Milton, Woodstock and all over Canton!!

Our location is in southeast Cherokee county near the Fulton County line where Canton, Woodstock and Alpharetta meet. If you’re familiar with the area, it’s the Hickory Flat triangle where Hickory Flat Hwy and Hickory Road meet just 7 miles from the Fulton county border. We’re just behind the Hickory Flat library and less than a mile from Hickory Flat Elementary School, Dean Rusk middle school and Sequoyah High School.

From Jasper or Ballground:

Take 575 South to exit 16B towards Roswell

Turn left onto Hickory Flat Hwy

We are 6.3 miles down Hickory Flat Hwy on the left.

The entrance to our plaza is by the Kroger gas station. Go past the Kroger and we are in the next set of buildings on the right between the Mizu and Great Clips.

From Alpharetta or Milton:

Take Mayfield Rd and turn right on Providence Rd

Turn right onto 372 and in 1/2 mile turn left onto Batesville

In 5 miles turn right onto Hickory Flat Hwy then look for the Kroger gas station.

The entrance to our plaza is by the Kroger gas station. Go past the Kroger and we are in the next set of buildings on the right between the Mizu and Great Clips.

From Downtown Woodstock:

Take Main St north to make a right on East Cherokee.

Follow East Cherokee 5 miles to Hickory Rd (you’ll see the library on the right and the schools on the left)

Turn right onto Hickory Rd then left into the Kroger plaza.

We’re in the first set of buildings on your left between the Mizu and the Great Clips.

(Depending on your location in Woodstock, it may be faster for you to take Arnold Mill Road to Hwy 140 north to Hickory Flat)

From Downtown Canton:

Take 140 South to turn right on Hickory Flat Hwy.

Follow Hickory Flat Hwy south for 6 miles.

Just after you pass through Hickory Flat (CVS, Walgreens, Shell station) look for the Kroger gas station on the right.

Does My Kid Practice Enough??

Parents often comment that want their children to be self motivated to practice their instrument. While a daily, scheduled practice time is highly recommended, there are a few things that we can do to help inspire a love of music which can really give purpose and motivation to our practice.

1) Listen to music!

Any chance you have, any style- in the car, at home while your cooking dinner and when your in the yard playing are all great times to have some music playing. Discuss about what you like about a song. Or what you don’t!
2) Watch music videos and live performances on Youtube.
There are some amazing resources on youtube. I tell my students to watch there favorite bands and study the person that is playing the instrument they are learning. I am inspired, motivated and learn new things each time I do this.
3) Go to concerts. For those young ones that have never been to a concert, this can be life changing experience. For those that live near Canton, I really like the Verizon Amphitheater in Alpharetta and there are some great small venues like
the Tabernacle where you can see a wide variety of well known musical acts for
lower ticket prices. Also, check out the Atlanta Symphony once a year, they are an awesome bunch of musicians! I love the movie themed concerts. They play the scores from Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. as well as family concerts and concerts for young people.
4) Guitar Hero!
Many of my students enjoy Rock band, Guitar Hero etc. and know the songs by heart. This gives a fun launching point/reference when their music teacher asks the question “what kind of music do you like?”

These are just a few tips that are fun and can help the musician in your household continue to be inspired to get better at their instrument. Try a couple and let us know what works for you!

Teacher of the Month: Kyle Lovely

What is the thing you like most about teaching?

The best part about teaching is seeing how much more confident my students become with themselves after accomplishing progressively more difficult music.  So many of my students come in initially knowing very little about music and within a few months are performing at our recital.  It’s amazing to see such progress in a short amount of time, and it really gives them something to be proud of.

How do you inspire students to practice more?

Everyone goes through phases when they simply don’t feel like practicing for a period of time.  It’s completely normal, but it’s my job to help them get back in the game.  I ask them on occasion why they started playing.  Were they inspired by a friend?  Did they see someone on TV play?  There’s always a reason why we wanted to play and sometimes we lose the long term focus because practicing can get tedious in the short term.  Sometimes it requires a change in the repertoire, sometimes a fresh new song can inspire, everyone responds differently.  I made it through many phases of not wanting to practice, so I share some of my experiences with my students to help them out as well.

What is your educational and/or performance background?

I attended University of New Haven and earned a BA in Music and Sound Recording.  I’ve been a professional musician since I graduated college.  I’ve actively toured in bands and released quite a few albums over the years.

What is your favorite type of music?

Classical, metal, and video game music.

If you could give a quick tip for pianists, what would it be?

Be patient and stay positive.  Today’s struggles will be tomorrow’s eases. 🙂

What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Taco Bell.

Any other interesting facts about you?

I have an uncanny affinity for tacos, love playing video games, and I’m currently finishing up two albums being released later this year.
